Many years ago, in the 1960's, I was in my late teens and living at home with my parents and two sisters. I had a job I loved, a boyfriend and a good social life. Thoughts of religion and spirituality were far from my mind but it was one of the happiest and most stable times of my life.
One night I had gone to bed and was deeply asleep when I became aware of someone or something trying to wake me up. I was very annoyed by this intrusion and remember telling them to go away and angrily shrugging my shoulder. The next thing I knew I was lying on my other side looking out into the dark bedroom. There was a pale light coming through the curtains which I took to be moonlight and I could see the shapes of the furniture and the humped outline of my sister lying in her bed by the door. This was all very reassuring and I felt completely calm.
A voice then spoke to me telepathically saying that I was to be shown something. As I lay there a small screen started to materialize before me, maybe the size of a large laptop. As it did so I was still able to see the room's contours through it, which again was reassuring. It all felt so normal. A picture began to appear on the screen. It was of a landscape in dull, muted shades of beiges and grey-browns. There were no bright colours, no blue sky or green grass, no sense of sunshine, water or weather. Everything was dull, drab and dry. It appeared to be a huge rift valley with a rock-strewn path meandering across the flat plain. Each side of this valley were towering, vertical cliffs.
As this scene finished materializing I found myself within the picture. I was standing on the top of one of the cliffs looking out over the valley. There was someone standing just behind me; I couldn't see them but I felt that it was a male presence and a very serious one at that. He told me, telepathically, to study the pathway. As I stared down at it I noticed a couple of figures. The first one was about two-thirds the way across the valley floor. I saw a small, person almost doubled over as if carrying a huge weight upon his or her back. This individual struggled to pick their feet up from the stoney path and every movement they made was laborious and heart-breakingly slow. I felt wrung with pity for them.
I then looked further across the valley and saw another small figure climbing up the side of the cliff, pulling themselves up slowly and carefully as if upon a path rough-hewn into the rock. My unseen companion explained that I, too, would have to travel along that path, that everyone has to. This statement filled me with trepidation. He then continued with an outline of the long-term aim and focus of humanity/souls which appears to be one of taking on more and more responsibility and ultimately merging with the God-head. I remember feeling completely overwhelmed by this information, indeed not wishing to have been told so much.
I remember nothing more, other than waking the next morning and the experience rushing back into my mind as I made my way downstairs for breakfast. Over the decades since I have thought about it from time to time but was largely baffled by it all until about ten years ago when I stumbled upon an old, second-hand book by Hewat McKenzie. In this book, amazingly, is an illustration of a scene of the lowest astral plane which he claims to have travelled to psychically and which bears a startling resemblance to the geographical terrain I was shown.
Most astonishingly of all, for me, he refers to being shown scenes projected upon 'an astral screen'. This book was written in 1916, long before the advent of television, computers or other such technology. A year ago I came across the writings of Michael Newton (Destiny of Souls, 2000) and was struck, in turn, by his description of 'three dimensional viewing screens'. These are of different sizes and are used in the next life for purposes of education or personal illumination.
I offer no explanations for my experience but it is as real and concrete to me today as my memories of giving birth to my daughters. I hope it will be of interest and benefit to others in some way.
