The reasons why it is so important to have women gather together in shamanic circle are many. There are few medicine women or holders of sacred space who come clean about the real reasons that women need to come together is shamanic holy space. Shamanic teachers and medicine people usually walk on egg shells when it comes to being truthful about what is going on when it comes to the whole issue of feminine disempowerment. There are some obvious reasons why women-only shamanic circles are vital: profound healing for the feminine spirit, connection to the divine and a feeling of being able to contribute to community - women globally often yearn for purpose.
So many of them, after all, are denied life purpose or voice - they are not the ones making the most important decisions that affect every life on the planet. Women quite naturally use bonding as a means to create harmonious societies and communities. These gifts that women-only shamanic circles can offer can be accepted as an article of faith. There is another reason why women-only shamanic circles must prevail, but because holders of sacred space do not want to upset anyone, they keep this quiet. Shamanism today, mostly in the West, has become a business: to chime on about one of the real reasons why women need to have their own sacred shamanic space might upset too many people - a lot of money could be lost.
I am not concerned so much with money, as with truth. If you look out at the world with clear vision, you will see how many places there are where men gather together - alone. The world is awash with groups and organizations where only men are allowed. As a woman, if you so much as walk into a barber shop asking for a short haircut, at worst, you will be shown the door. At best, you will be tolerated. I have walked into barber shops before where, on the rare occasion when I was allowed in, I could hear men muttering under their breaths and moaning about my presence.
The damage done to the group feminine soul is immense. Patriarchal rule for the last four to six thousand years has survived, partly, through dividing and ruling women. It has disempowered and controlled women by keeping them separated from each other. Through the power of a women-only shamanic circle, this power loss can be addressed and healed. Here, women can be in each other's presence and share valuable life experience and wisdom. In shamanic circle, women's spirit can be nourished and sustained from the warmth and compassion of a sisterhood aching to reawaken. Women-only shamanic circles are not about competing with men and following suit by rejecting them as they have rejected women. They are about sitting in sacred space to listen to each other long enough to openly speak of power loss and generate true respect for a feminine, mystical heritage long forgotten.
When women sit together in circle, they turn to each other for support and nurturing. If nurturing does not come from there, it will probably not come from anywhere else. It is hard to walk with men in relationship at this time - many women find themselves in an intensely lonely place where the men in their lives are concerned, and they yearn for reciprocity from husbands, partners and boyfriends. Through the magic of women-only shamanic circles, women are offered a glimpse of something that they may not have considered: that when they come together to support each other in the timelessness of the circle, they unlock a potential to change this painful relationship pattern. And healing global unconsciousness depends on women first re-writing their personal contracts.
